In this interactive seminar, UC Urvine Professor Richard Swart will share his latest research highlighting how the nature of capital and innovation is evolving to favor local communities. Participants will also learn about Oregon’s more supportive environment for implementing crowdfunding and engage in discussions about how the Seattle region can use it more effectively as a tool for community empowerment and economic justice. He was recently appointed the Filene Fellow in Emerging Technology and Visiting Professor at the University of California, Irvine where we will focus on FinTech and its impact as part of the Institute for Money, Technology at Financial Inclusion. Richard leverages over 20 years’ experience of proven leadership, academic rigor and an extensive global network to help educate and mentor firms, policy makers and businesses. He and is a highly trusted expert resource for governments, academics and crowdfunding platforms. Richard advises the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and works with several other prominent foundations, think tanks, funds and corporations. He is co-author of Crowdfunding: The Corporate Era, published in June 2015 by Elliott & Thompson. About Amy Pearl: Amy founded Hatch Innovation, a nonprofit social enterprise, in 2004, and is the executive director. Its mission is to enable citizens to launch enterprises that improve communities. The conviction that ordinary citizens have immense untapped capacity for service and innovation grounds her work. By making innovative strategies “learnable” she enables youth and adults to foster a more equitable, innovative, and capable society. She works at the system level, focusing on building an enabling ecosystem for social and community-building enterprises to flourish, growing healthy local communities. She launched Hatch: A Community Innovation Lab in 2013, the economic engine HatchOregon in 2014, ComCap in 2015, and HatchLab Baker in 2016. About Janine Firpo: Janine is currently the Deputy Director on the Financial Services for the Poor team at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where she and her team design philanthropic and impact investments to bring poor people out of poverty by including them in the formal economy. Janine has more than 35 years of experience in information technology with the last twenty focused on using information technology and business thinking to solve challenging social and development problems.
